Health Tip: Take an Antibiotic Properly

Be sure to finish the prescription

(HealthDay News) -- Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections only, and do not work against viral infections. The dose prescribed to you is specific to the strength and type of infection you have, so it is important to take all of the medication as prescribed.

Even though you may already be feeling better, the most important thing is to take all of the medication as prescribed until the prescription is finished, says the Alliance for the Prudent use of Antibiotics. If you don't, a more stubborn infection may return.

When taking an antibiotic, be sure to ask your doctor whether the drug could interfere with other medications, food, or alcohol, and if it needs to be taken with food or drink.
