Health Tip: Genital Warts

A viral infection transmitted sexually

(HealthDayNews) -- Some 8 million Americans each year acquire genital warts, transmitted by sexual contact. They're caused by the human papilloma virus, according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

Genital warts typically appear as single or multiple cauliflower-like pink or red swellings. Other possible symptoms of infection include itching, burning and tenderness around the affected area. Often, however, the warts may initially be painless and symptom-free, so patients may not be aware they are infected.

Genital warts are most common among people aged 15 to 29. People who engage in frequent sexual activity with multiple partners have a higher risk of contracting the virus.

Treatment options include using liquid nitrogen to burn the wart, and if that fails, surgery. But genital warts can be quite resistant and many require more than one treatment, the society says.
