Health Tip: Prevent Infection of Your New Tattoo

Keep the area clean and covered

(HealthDay News) -- If you've gotten a new tattoo, you'll want to take proper care of it to be sure the site doesn't get infected.

The Nemours Foundation suggests you keep the tattoo covered for the first 24 hours. Once the bandage is removed, you should wash the site several times a day with an antibacterial soap and gently pat dry. Follow up with a gentle lotion or antibiotic ointment.

Try to keep the area dry, and avoid swimming, hot tubs and baths. To prevent fading, you should cover your tattoo if it is exposed to the sun.

Scabs may form over your tattoo, but avoid picking at them, as it may affect the shape or color and prevent proper healing. If your tattoo becomes red, sore or swollen, you should see your doctor to treat a possible infection.
