Slow Progress Toward Meaningful Use Stage 2

As of July 1, 2014, 972 of 2,823 eligible providers and 10 of 128 hospitals have attested to MU2

WEDNESDAY, July 30, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Providers and hospitals are making slow progress toward achieving meaningful use stage 2, according to an article published July 10 in Medical Economics.

According to Medical Economics, based on data released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at the Health Information Technology Policy Committee meeting on July 8, 2014, 972 of the 2,823 eligible providers had attested to meaningful use stage 2 as of July 1. This marked an increase from 50 eligible providers in May. Only 10 of the 182 eligible hospitals have attested to meaningful use stage 2.

Part of the challenge for physicians may be the lack of electronic health record (EHR) vendors who have obtained 2014 certification. Only eight different EHR vendors have been used for meaningful use stage 2 attestation.

"Although there are some differences in 2014 compared to previous years, we have seen in all of the past years that the vast majority of attestations happen in the later parts of the year, and we expect that to continue in 2014, even probably to a greater degree," said Jennifer King, Ph.D., chief of research and evaluation at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, according to the article.
