How to tell if your child's hearing is sound

Birth to 6 months:

  • Startles to loud sounds.
  • Calms and turns to your voice.
  • Wakes up to a sudden noise.

6 to 12 months:

  • Responds to his or her name.
  • Enjoys toys that make noise.
  • Understands no and bye-bye.

12 to 18 months:

  • Enjoys music.
  • Uses at least 10 words.

1/1/2 to 2 years:

  • Combines words into phrases.
  • Follows simple directions.
  • Recognizes names of family members.

3 to 5 years:

  • Enjoys songs and books.
  • Speech can be understood by parents and friends.
  • Can use both ears on the telephone.
