The Tussle Over Tube Time

Parents need to monitor kids' TV viewing

Too much TV is not good for your child. You know that. But you also know it's almost impossible to keep your kid from watching the tube. How do you make the best of a bad situation?

Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati offers these suggestions:

  • Limit your child's viewing to two hours a day or less;
  • Be a role model and watch less TV yourself;
  • Monitor your child's viewing; watch the shows with him or her, then discuss the shows afterward, and
  • Engage your child in reading and other activities.
Also, encourage your child to go outside and play. Don't use TV as a reward for good behavior; instead suggest a trip to an amusement park or other fun activities.
