ATV Alert

Children under 16 shouldn't operate these vehicles

(HealthDayNews) -- As the popularity of all-terrain vehicles grows, so does the number of ATV-related accidents.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids under age 16 not be allowed to operate ATVs.

Once your kids are old enough to get behind the wheel, make sure they follow these safety rules, described by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia:

  • Don't ride on public roads.
  • Don't go out alone.
  • Maintain a safe distance between you and other riders.
  • Don't carry passengers.
  • Always wear a helmet with eye protection, as well as gloves, long pants and boots.
  • Don't ride after dusk.
  • Know the area in which you're riding. An open field may have a barbed wire fence that doesn't become visible until it's too late.
  • Ride at a safe and responsible speed.
  • Maintain your equipment in top working order.
