(HealthDayNews) -- Each year, more than 3,000 people choke to death, many of them kids, according to the American Red Cross.
Take these safety precautions to prevent your child from choking:
- Don't leave small objects, such as buttons, coins and beads, within an infant's reach.
- Have your child sit in a high chair or at a table while he eats.
- Slow down a fast eater.
- Give infants soft foods that don't require chewing.
- Make sure toys are too large to be swallowed.
- Don't give young children foods like nuts, grapes, popcorn or raw vegetables.
- Cut easy-to-choke-on foods, like hot dogs, into small pieces.
