First School Day Fears

Let your child know anxiety is normal

(HealthDayNews) -- With the new school year just around the corner, make your child's first day back less daunting with these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Remind your child that she's not the only student who's feeling anxious. Also, tell her that teachers know that kids are anxious and will make extra efforts to make them feel comfortable.
  • Equip your child with some strategies for coping with bullies. For example, he shouldn't give in to a bully's demands, but simply walk away or tell the bully to stop.
  • Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school or ride with on the bus.
