(HealthDay News) -- Stuttering is an interrupted pattern of speech, often characterized by words, letters or syllables being repeated or delayed.
The Nemours Foundation suggests what parents should do when a child stutters:
- Avoid pushing your child to speak perfectly. Instead, make conversation relaxed, and don't appear frustrated or upset.
- Promote family conversations over meals, and turn off the TV to avoid distraction.
- Don't correct your child when he or she speaks, which could lead to more self-consciousness.
- Avoid interrupting your child, or giving your child instructions on speaking.
- Make sure you are clear and deliberate when you speak to or around your child.
- Allow your child to speak freely, and don't speak for your child.
