Health Tip: Keep Babies Warm During Winter

Dress them in layers when venturing outside

(HealthDay News) -- The sometimes frigid temperatures of winter mean taking extra precautions to keep babies warm and comfortable.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:

  • If you and baby are heading outdoors, dress baby in several thin layers. Also remember warm boots, hats and mittens.
  • Generally, baby should be dressed in one more layer than an adult would need in the same environment.
  • For sleep, dress baby in a warm one-piece sleeper and wearable blanket. But don't add a blanket, pillows or bunting to the crib, as these increase the risk of SIDS.
  • If you have to use a blanket to keep baby warm, use a thin blanket that is tucked beneath the crib mattress and is pulled up no higher than baby's chest.
