Health Tip: Remembering DEETails

Precautions for insect repellant use

(HealthDayNews) -- Insect repellants that contain DEET have been associated with occasional health problems, including skin rash, swelling and itching, and eye irritation, according to the New York State Department of Health.

When using repellants containing DEET, be sure to take these precautions:

  • Don't allow children to apply DEET to themselves.
  • Apply DEET to your own hands, then put it on your child.
  • Avoid applying to the face.
  • Avoid prolonged and excessive use of DEET.
  • Don't apply repellant in enclosed areas.
  • Don't use it on skin that is damaged by sunburn, cuts, bruises or skin conditions, such as psoriasis.
  • Wash treated skin and clothing after returning indoors.

If you think you or your child is having an adverse reaction to DEET, wash the area immediately, then contact your doctor.
