Steer Clear of Steroids

The health risks are many

(HealthDay) -- If you're a teen athlete, you no doubt feel pressure to keep up with your peers. And you might think taking steroids will help. The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information says, think again.

Steroids can cause heart disease, baldness in both sexes, acne and cysts, make you angry and hostile and put you at risk for AIDS and other diseases through the use of dirty needles.

The clearinghouse also says steroids are illegal unless prescribed by a doctor for specific conditions. If you get the drugs illegally, they may be impure or labeled incorrectly. And, if you think everyone else is taking them, the agency says less than 4 percent of eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders use them.
