Protecting Your Infant From SIDS

Health agency has some suggestions

(HealthDayNews) -- Newborns should sleep on their backs.

According to the National Institute of Child and Human Development (NICHD), this may reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, the leading cause of death in infants between the ages of one month and one year.

To further diminish the danger, NICHD recommends you:

  • Have your baby sleep on a firm mattress.
  • Make your home smoke-free.
  • Keep the temperature in your baby's room at the same moderate level as in the rest of the house.
