The High Cost of Impotence

Journal ranks different treatments

(HealthDayNews) -- Viagra may be the newest treatment for male erectile dysfunction and, it won't surprise you to know, it is also the costliest.

According to the journal Pharmacoeconomics, which compared three-year cost estimates for different non-surgical treatments for ED:

  • Viagra used over those three years could have an estimated cost of $1,728,142.
  • Second highest in cost are papaverine injections into the penis, at $384,624.
  • Next are suppositories inserted into the urethra, at $266,483.
  • Testosterone patches have an estimated cost of $81,866.
  • And last come reusable vacuum devices, which cost $51,930.

The study assumes a managed-care plan with 100,000 enrollees and accounts for the costs of medical evaluation, treatment and follow-up examinations.
