Researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research, Amsterdam, gave testosterone supplements to middle-aged and elderly rats.

As they reported in the journal Behavioral and Neural Biology, the sex hormone not only failed to reverse the age-related declines in learning, it actually impaired the ability of both groups of rats to retain learned information.
