Dark Thoughts

Work performance affected by absence of light

(HealthDayNews) -- Do you know why Santa Claus travels all over the world every December?

Could be because he's afraid of being sick at the North Pole during the wrong time of year.

Researchers at the University of Alaska studied the frequency of medication errors in Alaskan hospitals, finding that the majority of them occur during the darkest part of the year.

As reported in the Psychiatry Research, the chances of a medication error in an Alaskan hospital were twice as great in December as in September, and 58 percent of the errors are made during the first three months of each year.

Apparently light deprivation and seasonal affective disorder not only alter mood, they affect work performance, too.
