Men afraid to admit they're afraid

(HealthDay is the new name for HealthScoutNews.)

(HealthDayNews) -- If you ask a man what he's afraid of, don't expect an honest answer.

That's what a Purdue University study concludes. The research involved a group of 26 men and 30 women who were asked about their fears of fish, rats, mice and roller coasters.

As you might expect, the men reported that they were practically fearless in the face of everything. But then the group was shown short films about fish, rats, mice and roller coasters and were given the false impression that their heart rates were being monitored so that their fear levels could be accurately measured.

When the surveys were given a second time, the men reported higher levels of fear of rats, mice and roller coasters. The women's results stayed the same.
