(HealthDayNews) -- Children's fears about medical procedures vary depending on their age. If your elementary school child is scheduled for surgery, Columbus Children's Hospital recommends you:
- Prepare your child about a week ahead of the operation. And answer questions honestly.
- Focus on positive behaviors and strengths, and reinforce them.
- If possible, let your child talk to friends who have had similar experiences.
- Tell your child what to expect, including what he will see, hear, feel and taste.
- Dispel any myths. Fear of body mutilation is common at this age.
