(HealthDayNews) -- If your son or daughter is heading off to college this fall, make the transition less traumatic with these tips offered by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia:
- Prepare for separation anxiety. Take comfort in the fact that whether your teen expresses it or not, he too is anxious about the separation.
- Keep talking to your child, and write or email often once he's at school. Even if he doesn't respond, he needs to know you're still there for him.
- Start letting go now by giving your teen more space. Give advice only when asked, and let your child learn from his own mistakes, as long as his decisions aren't a threat to his or anyone else's safety.
- Relax. Support and encourage your college-bound child, and have faith that your parenting will guide him.
