Defeating Depression

Therapy, medication can give you back your life

(HealthDay) -- If you're suffering from clinical depression, you might be reluctant to tell anyone how you feel. Unfortunately, a stigma still surrounds this very treatable disease. Or you might blame yourself for feeling depressed, even suicidal. But it's crucial that you reach out and get help, mental health experts say.

About 15 percent of those struggling with depression are successful at killing themselves, and every year at least 30,000 Americans take their own lives. Mental Health Net says it's important to understand that suicide is not a disorder, but rather the result of underlying problems like depression.

If you have suicidal thoughts, see a health professional or get counseling immediately. Usually, a combination of medication and therapy can help you break depression's grip.
