Generic Prozac to Debut

Cost of antidepressant expected to drop sharply

If you're one of the millions of people who take Prozac, relief from the cost of the antidepressant is on the way, The (Bergen County, N.J.) Record reports.

That's because Barr Laboratories has won the right to sell a generic form of the drug when Eli Lilly & Co.'s patent expires next month. For six months, Barr will be the only company allowed to sell the generic Prozac.

Barr officials have said their version of the drug will be 30 percent to 45 percent cheaper than the original, the story says.

The BBC has an in-depth look at Prozac and the revolution it launched in the treatment of depression. A story in the Washington Post, written by a clinical professor of psychiatry, details the side effects of Prozac and other antidepressants.
