Health Tip: Handling Postpartum Depression

Beating the "baby blues"

(HealthDay News) -- It's supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life. You got through the long months of pregnancy and the challenges of childbirth, and now you've got a brand new baby. So, why do you feel so blue?

While the first few weeks of having a baby are almost always disorienting, according to the Duke University Medical Center, new mothers who are frequently sad or having difficulty bonding with their babies after the first three or four weeks should seek counseling.

While antidepressant medication may be needed, a number of women find that sharing experiences with other new mothers goes a long way toward easing the baby blues. Joining a postpartum support group may be the best medicine.
