If You're Down, Try Revving Up

Running can help fight depression

(HealthDayNews) -- Running can get rid of the symptoms of depression faster than psychotherapy, according to research at the University of Wisconsin's mental health clinic.

A study of sedentary students and professors found more than half the patients complained of depression, a rate five times the national average. The researchers felt the academic lifestyle -- too many hours of concentration and too much sitting in the library -- was the cause.

So, instead of traditional therapy, 10 new patients were given this prescription: go outside and run, three times a week, for half an hour to an hour every workout. Don't worry about performance. Just keep moving to the best of your ability.

By the end of 10 weeks, six had recovered fully from their depression, without discussing their problems with a therapist.
