Over-Drive Time

Your long daily commute could be damaging your health

(HealthDay) -- Do you sometimes feel like you are wasting your life away sitting behind the wheel of your car? Health experts are now saying you might be damaging your health with that long commute.

According to an article from ABC News, more than 2.5 million Americans travel at least 90 minutes each day. This is happening because increasing numbers of people are pursuing the suburban dream, complete with white picket fences and big backyards where their children can play. But instead of living the dream, they're driving themselves right into the arms of health problems.

Part of the problem is the stress created by long commutes. But that's only part of the problem. Another problem is that breathing highway air is causing more asthma attacks. The increase in diesel exhaust is also destroying the ozone layer, according to some experts, which leads to more health problems. Medical experts have linked other problems to long commutes, including high blood preassure, sleep deprivation and depression.
