Test could tell women when childbearing years are ending

(HealthDay) -- Women wondering whether their biological clock is running out could one day take a genetic test that would tell them, says this story from the Independent of London.

The story details the efforts of researchers to study pairs of sisters to find a genetic marker for menopause. The researchers, who published results of their study in Human Reproduction, say the start of menopause is determined almost entirely by genetics.

The Independent notes that with more women delaying motherhood to pursue a career, fertility information is becoming more important. Still, the story adds, delaying having a family is risky because complications and birth defects become more likely as women age.

Women's Health has an overview of problems associated with a later pregnancy. And the March of Dimes also is a good source of information on the topic.
