Health Tip: Handling a Hurricane

What to do before and after the storm

(HealthDay News) -- If you're in an area that's under a hurricane or tropical storm warning, the United Way of Miami-Dade County advises that you:

  • Listen often to the TV or radio for official instructions.
  • Follow all directions issued by local officials, and leave immediately if told to do so.
  • Store valuables and personal papers in a waterproof container on the highest level of your home.
  • If the power goes out, turn off major appliances to reduce power surge when electricity is restored.

After the storm, you should:

  • Wait until an area is declared safe before entering.
  • Not drive in flooded areas.
  • Stay away from moving and standing water. Shallow moving water can sweep you off your feet, and standing water may be electrically charged from downed power lines.
  • Beware of snakes, insects and animals driven to higher ground by flood waters.
  • Take pictures of damage, both to the house and its contents, for insurance claims.
