Health Tip: Mosquito Management

Dry out places where they can breed

(HealthDayNews) -- Not only are mosquitoes annoying summer pests, they can transmit dangerous diseases such as West Nile virus. The best way to control them is to eliminate places where they can breed, says the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services.

Here are some suggestions:

  • If you have a birdbath or fountain, replace the water at least twice weekly.
  • Discard or cover old tires so they can't fill with water.
  • Regularly drain the water from outdoor receptacles, such flower pot drain dishes, recycling bins or garbage cans.
  • Clean and maintain rain gutters and spouts.
  • Store wheelbarrows, tubs, wading pools and boats upside down when not in use.
  • Clean up leaves and yard debris from low-lying areas to reduce stagnant water pools.
