(HealthDay News) -- When you're ready to hit the hiking trails, be sure to pack a few essentials.

The Letsmove.gov website suggests what to bring:

  • A backpack.
  • A supply of water.
  • A stash of healthy snacks, such as apples, nuts, unsweetened dried fruits, whole grain pretzels or crackers, or some baby carrots.
  • Protective gear, such as hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • A few extra layers of clothing, and a rain coat.
