Health Tip: Start a Grill Fire Safely

Use only approved lighter fluid

(HealthDay News) -- Starting a grill can be dangerous, even one that uses charcoal. You can literally get burned if you aren't careful.

The National Fire Protection Association advises:

  • Use a chimney starter to safely start coals.
  • Only use charcoal starter fluid. Never use any other flammable liquid.
  • Store lighter fluid out of a child's reach, and away from any source of heat.
  • After grilling, allow coals to completely cool, then place what's left in a metal container for disposal.
