Thrill Spills Are a Big Chill

Federal agency reports 10,508 injuries last year at amusement park rides

(HealthDay) -- At least 10,580 people were injured and two people were killed at amusement parks and carnivals around the United States last year, says this CNN News story.

The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, which keeps track of incidents at both fixed-site and what the agency calls "mobile amusement attractions," says the number of injuries has increased significantly since 1993.

But, the story adds, an industry spokesman says that U.S. amusement parks have 315 million annual visitors, and that the CPSC figures show there is no safer form of recreation. He says mechanical rides at amusement parks run 3.2 billion times each year.

A watchdog group, called ThemeParkInsider, details individual accidents at theme parks around the country. And About.com offers suggestions to protect yourself at amusement parks.
