Tips For People Who Live Alone

Leave outside lights on overnight

(HealthDayNews) -- If you live alone, especially if you're a woman, take heed of these safety measures from the American Automobile Association:

  • Keep your doors and windows locked, and install a one-inch dead bolt and spy hole onto your front door.
  • Leave outside lights on at night.
  • Leave some indoor lights on when you're out to avoid coming home to a dark house.
  • If you haven't called for a repairman, don't allow one inside before calling his workplace to verify his reason for coming.
  • Use only your initials on your mailbox and in phone book listings.
  • Never disclose to people you don't know well that you live alone.
  • Don't leave a message on your answering machine announcing that you aren't home or that you've gone on vacation.
