(HealthDayNews) -- Summer thunderstorms carry the risk of tornados. If there is a tornado watch in your area, the University of Wisconsin advises you:
- Listen to your local radio and TV stations for updates.
- Be alert to changing weather conditions. Blowing debris or the sound of an approaching tornado may alert you. People say a coming tornado sounds like a freight train.
If a tornado watch is upgraded to a tornado warning, it means a funnel cloud has been sighted and may be headed to your area. Here's what you should do:
- If you are inside, go to a place where you will be protected from glass and flying objects.
- If you are outside, hurry to the basement of a nearby sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area.
- If you are in a car or mobile home, get out immediately and head for safety.
