Attacks are rare, but you can protect yourself

Shark attacks have produced some horrifying headlines this summer. But marine experts say your chances of dying from a shark attack are less than your chances of being killed by lightning or a bee sting.

Still, the precautions you can take to minimize your risk include:

  • swim in a group;
  • avoid the water at dawn or dusk;
  • stay out of the water if you're bleeding;
  • leave shiny jewelry ashore.
