(HealthDayNews) -- Deep frying food is a common cause of home fires. In most cases, the oil or grease ignites because it gets too hot, too fast.
Health Canada suggests these safety tips:
- Use an electric fryer with a temperature control.
- Heat cooking oil slowly. As soon as the cooking is complete, turn off the heat.
- When deep frying any food, stay in the kitchen.
If grease or oil catches fire, here's what to do:
- To put out the fire, cover the flames with a large metal lid and turn off the heat.
- Don't try to pick up the pan. The flames could spread quickly.
- If you get burned, put the burn under cold water immediately.
- If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop and roll.
