Safeguard your home before you go on vacation

(HealthDayNews) -- If you're going away during the holidays, the American Automobile Association recommends you secure your home by:

  • Using light timers to make it look like someone is home.
  • Telling your neighbors how long you'll be gone and who may visit in your absence.
  • Leaving a phone number with a relative or neighbor in case of an emergency.
  • Storing your valuable in a safety deposit box or safe.
  • Stopping mail and newspaper deliveries.
  • Having someone mow your lawn or shovel your snow.
  • Leaving a car in your driveway.
  • Considering a house sitter.
