Monitor your home electrical wiring system

(HealthDayNews) -- Faulty electrical wiring causes about 40,000 fires in people's homes every year, according to the National Electric Safety Foundation.

Most of these fires could have been prevented if the electrical systems had been more closely monitored.

The University of Wisconsin offers this safety guide:

  • Don't overload outlets and extension cords. Most home outlets can carry up to 1500 watts. Some kitchen circuits can take about 2000 watts.
  • Check that none of your electrical cords are frayed, damaged or tucked under rugs or carpets.
  • Use proper wattage light bulbs in lamps and light fixtures.
  • Place halogen lamps away from curtains, beds, rugs and other furnishings.
  • Test your smoke detectors and replace their batteries once a year.
