Health Tip: Create a Tornado Plan

Make sure the family knows what to do

(HealthDay News) -- Preparing the family for a tornado can help protect you and your loved ones during the unthinkable.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests:

  • Create and discuss an emergency plan for where to go in your home if there is a tornado.
  • Make sure you plan for a second escape route from each room of the home, marking where there is a rope or ladder if needed.
  • Explain the siren warning system, and make sure everyone knows where fire extinguishers and first-aid kits are.
  • Clearly mark utility switches and valves so you can quickly shut them off before a tornado.
