Health Tip: Going Sledding?

Suggestions to help avoid injury

(HealthDay News) -- Sledding is a fun winter ritual for kids and adults alike. But reckless sledding can land you in the hospital.

To avoid ruining your good time, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons advises:

  • Take extra precautions when sledding with young children, who have poorer coordination, a higher center of gravity and may be more prone to getting hurt.
  • Never sled on a public street.
  • Don't sled in public areas that aren't approved for the activity.
  • Sled in a seated, upright position and never on your stomach. Use a sled, never a plastic sheet.
  • Children should wear a helmet while sledding, and always have parental supervision.
  • Sledders should wear layers of clothing to stay warm, and avoid sledding in the dark.
