Health Tip: Stranded During a Snowstorm

Suggestions to help you stay safe

(HealthDay News) -- Winter weather is unpredictable, and you may find yourself stranded in your car during a snowstorm.

The website recommends:

  • Pull off the road and park your car with hazard lights flashing and a distress flag hanging from your window or antenna. Stay inside the car and call for help on your cell phone.
  • Each hour, turn the car on and run the heat for about 10 minutes to warm up. But first make sure you clear any snow away from the exhaust pipe.
  • Insulate yourself with seat covers, floor mats and maps. Huddle next to other passengers and move around a bit to stay warm.
  • Sleep in shifts, making sure one person is always awake to look for rescue crews.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, but if possible, drink plenty of fluids and eat regularly.
  • Take care not to drain your car battery.
  • Write out "help" or "SOS" in the snow or with rocks to help rescue crews identify you.
