WEDNESDAY, Sept. 11 (HealthDay News) -- A team of California-based breast imaging experts have developed a website and strategy in response to impending breast density notification laws, according to a special report published online Sept. 10 in Radiology.
Elissa R. Price, M.D., from the University of California San Francisco, along with colleagues from the California Breast Density Information Group, established a common response framework in anticipation of breast density notification legislation in the state of California, which would require notification of women with heterogeneously and extremely dense breast tissue. The group researched scientific evidence to develop a response to the key elements of the law.
The researchers recommend, based on national guidelines and peer-reviewed literature, that women with dense breast tissue at screening mammography follow supplemental screening guidelines based on breast cancer risk assessment. The group also constructed an easily accessible website that contains information about breast density, breast cancer risk assessment, and supplementary imaging for patients and referring clinicians.
"This multi-institutional, multidisciplinary approach may be useful for organizations to frame responses as similar legislation is passed across the United States," the authors write.
Several authors disclosed financial ties to the diagnostic and medical imaging industries.
