The American Lung Association offers these tips about buying one:
- Consider purifiers with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, which are the most effective way to trap airborne particles.
- Check the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) listed on the filter or purifier's packaging. This number reflects the effectiveness of the device.
- Don't buy purifiers that generate ozone. While it may make the air "smell" better, ozone can do more harm than good, especially among asthmatics.
- Pay attention to the device's price, including the cost of replacement filters and maintenance.
