Tips to help you choose an air purifier

You're tired of breathing all those pollutants that hang in the air on hot, hazy days. But what can you do? An electronic air purifier might help.

The American Lung Association offers these tips about buying one:

  • Consider purifiers with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, which are the most effective way to trap airborne particles.
  • Check the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) listed on the filter or purifier's packaging. This number reflects the effectiveness of the device.
  • Don't buy purifiers that generate ozone. While it may make the air "smell" better, ozone can do more harm than good, especially among asthmatics.
  • Pay attention to the device's price, including the cost of replacement filters and maintenance.
