(HealthDay News) -- Not long ago, many doctors didn't allow children with asthma to play sports or do anything physically strenuous.
But medical science has learned that being active and staying fit helps a child maintain proper body weight, which is important for asthmatics, and it can also strengthen lungs and help kids breathe better, the Nemours Foundation says.
In a recent Olympics, nearly 17 percent of the athletes had asthma and 30 percent won medals, the foundation notes.
But before engaging in any sport, make sure your child's asthma is under control, that he or she takes their medicine as prescribed, and that the doctor approves.
While it's usually safe to swim, walk or leisurely bike, the doctor may recommend limiting activities that require short bursts of energy (such as baseball) or endurance (long-distance running).
