Health Tip: Candidiasis

A fungal infection of the mouth and throat

(HealthDayNews) -- Candidiasis of the mouth and throat, also known as a "thrush," is an infection caused by overgrowth of a fungus called Candida, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Candida is normally found on skin or mucous membranes. However, if the environment inside the mouth or throat becomes imbalanced, Candida can multiply and cause thrush symptoms. These include painless white patches inside the mouth.

The condition, while it can affect normal newborns, occurs more frequently in people with weakened immune systems, particularly those with AIDS.

The infection can be treated with certain anti-fungal medications.
