Health Tip: Controlling a Nosebleed

Stay calm and sit down

(HealthDay News) -- Nosebleeds are most often attributable to dry air and picking the nose.

Other common causes include injury, some medical conditions, and certain drugs.

If your nose starts to bleed, the American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that you sit down while leaning forward slightly. Do not tilt your head back, as this may cause blood to run down your throat.

Using your thumb and index finger, pinch the tissue between the tip and the end of the bony part of your nose for at least five minutes.

Avoid blowing your nose and bending over to prevent the bleeding from recurring. If you can't stop the bleeding after 15 minutes, the AAFP recommends that you see your doctor.
