(HealthDay News) -- Foods that commonly cause an allergic reaction in some people include nuts, shellfish, milk, wheat, eggs and soy.

Symptoms of a food allergy can vary greatly based on the person, time eaten, and the type of food. The International Food Information Council lists these common symptoms of food allergy:

  • Gastrointestinal distress, including abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
  • Skin irritations including hives, rash and eczema.
  • Sneezing and runny nose.
  • Shortness of breath.
