Dumbing Down Allergies

New book offers practical guidance to allergy, asthma sufferers

THURSDAY, Sept. 16, 2004 (HealthDayNews) -- Asthma and allergy sufferers have a new ally as autumn approaches, thanks to the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics.

The group has published a new book, Allergic Asthma for Dummies, that provides practical information to help people manage their allergies.

"Every day, an estimated 15 people die of asthma," said group President Nancy Sander. "It's important to understand that allergic asthma is a very serious condition."

During the change of seasons, more airborne allergens are present. Dust mites and indoor mold also can be troublesome. Annually, asthma accounts for 14 million missed school days and about 14.5 million missed workdays for adults.

Authored by Dr. William Berger, the free book is available at www.breatherville.org or by calling (800) 878-4403.
