Open Drawer Policy

Behavior among seniors

(HealthDay is the new name for HealthScoutNews.)

TUESDAY, June 10, 2003 (HealthDayNews) -- Here's one of the curious idiosyncrasies of age.

Researchers at the Fukuoka Industrial Technology Center in Japan wanted to know the best design for home furniture for elderly people. Suitable drawer heights were important, since some elderly people have more trouble bending.

Almost by accident, the researchers discovered that regardless of drawer height, elderly people are more likely to open drawers as far as the drawers will go, while younger people keep the drawer mostly closed.
