Special Storm Warning

Elderly need to be ready in case of hurricane

The height of hurricane season is approaching. If you live in Florida or other high-risk areas, you probably have extra batteries and supplies on hand. But some people, especially the elderly and those with special medical needs, need to take extra precautions.

The city of St. Petersburg, Fla., advises home-bound seniors and those who receive health-care at home to be sure that either their doctors or the agencies providing home care know where they will be during a storm. It's also important to make sure that any medical equipment, such as a respirator, will work if power is lost.

If you must evacuate your home, take all your medications, written instructions on care you require, and your wheelchair or walker and any other special equipment.
