Titanic Survival Is a Wash

Those who made it through the disaster didn't live any longer than other people

THURSDAY, Dec. 18, 2003 (HealthDayNews) -- Survivors of the Titanic sinking didn't live any shorter or longer than the general population, says a study in this week's Christmas issue of the British Medical Journal.

Researchers compared the longevity of 435 Titanic survivors with two matched groups from the United States and Sweden.

On average, the Titanic survivors lived 1.7 years longer than the general population of the United States and 0.5 years longer than the general population of Sweden. Five women survivors lived past 100 and the three survivors still living are now in their 90s.

Even though male survivors who were first class passengers had higher socioeconomic status, they didn't outlive similar age males in the general population.
